UGRR Quilts, Codes, and Cotton

February 23, 2019 10 AM - 12 PM
at Johnson House

Join Johnson House and Awbury Arboretum for a quilt exhibit and workshop to juxtapose the themes represented by UGRR quilt codes, chattel slavery and the relationship of “cotton as fiber art and its history linked to enslavement” in America. Master quilt instructor, textile artist, and speaker Sharon Tindall (Montclair State University) will share her art and considerable research into how AA slaves used patterns to pass along UGRR routes. Participants will craft a quilt sample!  FREE with RSVP 10am -12pm
