The Art(ifacts) of Cooking: Colonial Kitchens, Archaeology, and Cuisine

March 16, 2019 1-4 PM
at Stenton

Join us on March 16th as we explore kitchens and cooking from the colonial era! Archaeologist Debbie Miller and Food Historian Deborah Peterson will discuss historic kitchens and foodways from the perspective of archaeological evidence and tools and equipment from Stenton’s collection. A lecture, followed by a hands-on conversation in our interpretive kitchen, will explore the objects used for cooking and food storage. We will learn more about recipes that were popular in the homes of 18th century Philadelphians, as well as explore Stenton’s kitchen, cellar and back dining room, to see the spaces that were used for preparing, storing, and serving food. We will conclude with a taste of treats made from 18th century recipes.
