“A Material World” Book Talk

June 18, 2019 4-6 PM
at Stenton

Please join us on Tuesday, June 18th from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm, at the Colonial Dames’ Headquarters Building, 1630 Latimer Street, for a series of “lightening talks” and a book signing with Margaretta Markle Lovell, George Boudreau, and other authors of the newly released volume of essays, A Material World: Culture, Society, and the Life of Things in Early Anglo-America.

Edited by George Boudreau and Margaretta Markle Lovell, with essays by Paul G. E. Clemens, Edward S. Cooke Jr., Stephen G. Hague, Patricia Johnston, Laura C. Keim, Ellen G. Miles, Emily A. Murphy, Nancy Siegel, Carol Eaton Soltis, and Jennifer Van Horn; the narratives in this handsome book draw on close analysis of material objects, including portraits, furniture, clocks, houses, natural history specimens, sculpture, prints, landscapes, and historical relics. The essays collectively demonstrate the value of material and visual culture as an evocative way into the world of the past.

The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Chipstone Foundation supported this publication.
