The mission of Awbury Arboretum is to preserve and interpret Awbury’s historic house and landscape, thereby, connecting an urban community with nature and history.

Awbury Arboretum Association, Inc. is a 55-acre landscape, originally the private estate of the Cope-Haines family, an extended clan of wealthy Quaker shipping merchants. The Arboretum is a green oasis located in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. In 1916, the Cope Descendents donated their property as a park for the education and enjoyment of the public. Since 1986, the Awbury Arboretum Association, an independent non-profit organization, has managed the property. Today the historic, Francis Cope House (1862), a gracious Victorian stone mansion, serves as Awbury’s headquarters. Surrounding the house on the east side if Washington Lane lie 33 acres of rolling lawns, mature specimen trees and copses, special gardens, a bird sanctuary, restored ponds, wetlands, meadows being returned to native plants and wildflowers, and woods. The former Caroline Cope Farm adds 22-acres to the property on the west side of Washington Lane. Currently the tract hosts a community garden and a one-acre organic vegetable farm. Twenty-four of the Awbury houses are listed on the National Register of Historic places as part of the Awbury Historic District established in 2001, which identifies the significance of Awbury’s role in the development of Germantown and Philadelphia.
