Until March 29 – La Salle University Art Museum, Jane Irish: War Is Not What You Think

The La Salle University Art Museum and the Connelly Library are pleased to present the work of Philadelphia‐based artist Jane Irish this winter. Irish’s work explores the impact of the Vietnam War and its continuing relevance today. The exhibition will be held simultaneously in two locations. The La Salle University Art Museum will feature Irish’s large mural work, The Conversation, along with several related multi‐media pieces. The exhibition will also include a selection of landscape paintings and ceramic vases. The Connelly Library will feature additional ceramic vases by Irish, juxtaposed with images and texts from its special collection, Imaginative Representations of the Vietnam War. The La Salle University Art Museum is located on the lower level of Olney Hall on the campus of La Salle University at 19th St. and Olney Ave. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Art Museum will also be open to the public from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2012. The Connelly Library is located at the corner of 20th street and Olney Avenue, and is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. 2, 9, 16, 23 – Awbury Arboretum, Beginner’s Beekeeping Course, 7 – 9 PM

Green Sanctuary Community Apiary’s comprehensive Beginners Beekeeping Course for urban beekeepers begins on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 7:00 pm at Awbury Arboretum. Class will meet weekly 7:00-9:00 pm.  This 10 session course includes everything you need to know to get started as a beekeeper plus important information about basic bee biology. Summer workshops will include “Swarm Control” and “Honey Harvesting.” Bee veils and smokers are required gear for this course.  Protective gear must be purchased by the 8th package installation class. Help with purchasing your beekeeping gear/supplies is available. We provide assistance with ordering bee packages and hives is for those who taking up the craft at home or at a secondary location. Choice of hive styles include top bar hive (recommended), Warre, or Langstroth hive box. (You will need to register in person for this option)

4, 11, 18, 25 - Awbury Arboretum, Quintessence Shakespeare Youth Workshop, 9:30AM – 12PM

Shakespeare is not only meant to be studied in school; it is to be spoken aloud and performed. This 10 week Shakespeare workshop for students aged 14 – 18 will help unlock the magic of Shakespeare for young adults. The Winter session of the workshop, taught by Quintessence actor Alexander Harvey, will focus on scenes from Shakespeare’s plays to unleash the power of language in action.  This rigorous, performance based workshop will give you both comprehensive voice and movement training, and the tools to own Shakespeare’s words, make them yours, and sink your teeth into his characters and text. This workshop will benefit both the experienced student and the complete beginner.  No prior acting experience is necessary, though a healthy imagination and an interest in Shakespeare will come in handy. Previous and new students are both encouraged to attend.  Classes will take place on Saturday mornings from 9:30am to 12pm for 10 weeks beginning January 28. All classes will take place in The Francis Cope House, Awbury Arboretum, One Awbury Road, Philadelphia, PA 19138. For more information about the class please email Artistic@QuintessenceTheatre.org. 18 – Stenton, Freedom Bound: African American Women in 18th and 19th Century Philadelphia, 1 PM

Join us at Stenton on Saturday February 18th for a lecture and discussion examining the rocky road to emancipation experienced by the majority of African American women in the 18th and 19th century urban North. Although experiences varied according to location, age, marital status, and wealth, African American women in Philadelphia serve as useful symbolic representations of the hopeful possibilities of emancipation. 26 – Johnson House, Annual Freedom Essay Contest: Commemorating the 324th Anniversary of the Protest Against Slavery, 3 - 5 PM

Student essay contest (3 – 12 in public/private schools) on the following topics: What is the difference between protest yesterday and today; What was the impact of the Civil Rights Movement; and What impact does protest have on society?
